Internal Medicine team

Availability

Internal Medicine accepts referrals Monday to Friday and our specialists are on call for emergencies all other times. Wherever possible, new cases are scheduled in the morning (9.00am to 4.00pm), enabling investigation to be performed on the same day.

Revisit appointments are scheduled between 10.30am and 3.30pm.

Internal Medicine will happily endeavour to accommodate clients unable to come at these times.

Client requirements

Medicine referral clients should bring with them their pets medical history and any previous radiographs taken at the general practice.

Where possible, the patient should be fasted on the day of examination to allow blood work, ultrasound or anaesthesia to be performed, if required.

Any medications can be given as normal.

Internal medicine encompasses many disciplines, including—

  • Gastroenterology

  • Haematology

  • Endocrinology

  • Respiratory medicine

  • Neurology

  • Cardiology

  • Urogenital Disease

Common medical procedures:

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is commonly used to investigate conditions affecting the abdomen and thorax, and to perform echocardiograms.

In some cases, ultrasound is also used to investigate ocular disease, and to image thyroid and parathyroid tumours and other soft tissue masses. We have state of the art Esaote Ultrasound Machines at both our Brisbane hospitals for use on both dogs and cats.

MRI

Advanced imaging is especially important to investigate neurologic disease affecting the brain and spinal cord.

MRI helps to establish a diagnosis, and provides the level of anatomical detail required for surgical intervention or radiation planning, if required.

MRI is a valuable tool to investigate nasal and middle ear disease, and soft tissue tumours.

Endoscopy

QVS has a complete range of endoscopes at both of our Brisbane hospitals, enabling us to perform endoscopy of the gastrointestinal, respiratory (rhinoscopy, bronchoscopy) and urogenital tracts.

Endoscopy enables direct visualisation and guided biopsy of lesions identified.

Technical procedures

Internal Medicine commonly performs procedures such as bone marrow aspirates, CSF collection, endotracheal washes, joint taps and feeding tube placement.

Outpatient ultrasound

An inexpensive, no-consultation ultrasound service is available for cases that don’t need a full referral.
